MetaTrader 4 Spread Betting Brokers

Last updated 13 min read

MetaTrader 4 spread betting brokers combine a spread betting account with MT4’s charts, order tools and automated trading features. The distinction matters: a broker can offer both MT4 and spread betting without making spread betting available through MT4.

Pepperstone and FXCM are two providers worth checking for this combination. Your choice should depend on the markets available in the actual MT4 account, the value of each volume increment, trading costs and execution terms. This guide concerns eligible UK residents; an international MT4 account should not be treated as an equivalent product.

Start with the account type, then assess the platform. The wider spread betting broker comparison covers providers beyond MT4, including firms whose own platforms may suit your trading better.

Which Brokers Offer MT4 Spread Betting?

The following examples combine MT4 access with spread betting in their published UK product information, checked in October 2026. They are not an exhaustive list or a ranking based on execution testing. Availability, account eligibility and instrument coverage can change.

Two MT4 spread betting account examples
Broker Account and platform combination Main comparison point
Pepperstone Offers spread betting through MT4 alongside separate CFD account types. Compare spread betting charges rather than importing prices from its Razor CFD account. The Pepperstone account and platform review covers its broader account choices.
FXCM Offers UK residents a spread betting account with MT4 access; Trading Station is another supported platform. Check the account selection and how volume translates into exposure. The FXCM account and platform review covers its spread betting account structure.

Pepperstone: Separate the Spread Betting Offer From CFD Pricing

Pepperstone’s UK MT4 offering includes spread betting, Standard CFDs and Razor CFDs. These are different account arrangements, despite sharing the same platform.

That distinction prevents a common comparison error. A headline raw spread on a commission based CFD account does not establish the cost of the spread betting version. Request the spread betting instrument specifications and funding schedule for the markets you intend to trade.

For an existing MT4 user, the practical question is whether familiar indicators and order routines work correctly with the spread betting symbols. Check symbol names, minimum volume and price increments before moving a saved template or automated strategy across.

FXCM: Check the Spread Betting Account Selection

FXCM’s UK account information identifies MT4 and Trading Station as spread betting platforms. Its application process requires the spread betting account option rather than assuming every trading account has that status.

FXCM also describes spread betting position sizes using lots. Do not read a lot value as a universal pounds-per-point amount. Establish the exposure and cash value for the chosen instrument before entering an order.

When comparing these providers, ask support the same questions in writing. Can the account spread bet your chosen market through MT4? What is the smallest cash exposure? Which charges apply overnight? Answers tied to an account and symbol are more useful than a general platform brochure.

What MT4 Controls—and What the Broker Controls

MT4 provides the trading interface. The broker supplies the account, instruments, prices and trading conditions. Familiar software does not make two brokers interchangeable.

MetaTrader supports custom indicators, Expert Advisors and strategy testing through its MQL4 development tools. These are platform capabilities, not promises that an automated strategy will be profitable or accepted under every broker’s terms. The MetaQuotes documentation on MT4 automated trading sets out that functionality.

Assess each broker’s implementation rather than the MT4 badge alone. Confirm the available instruments, order restrictions, trading sessions and account reporting. If you trade several markets, request the actual MT4 symbol list rather than relying on the broker’s total market count across all platforms.

A useful support question is: “Can I trade this instrument as a spread bet on my proposed MT4 account?” It leaves less room for an answer about a different platform or a CFD product.

A relationship diagram separates MT4’s interface and trading tools from the broker’s account, instruments, prices and trading conditions; the account must support spread betting through MT4.
MT4 supplies the interface; the broker determines the account’s products and trading conditions.

Check How MT4 Volume Converts Into Stake per Point

Spread betting risk is easiest to assess in cash per market point. MT4 order tickets commonly express trade size as volume or lots, so you need to establish the conversion between the displayed number and your financial exposure.

Do not assume that 1.00 volume means £1 per point, or that the same volume produces the same exposure on a currency pair, an index and gold. Check the symbol specification and the broker’s account documentation. Our guide to stake per point covers the cash calculation separately.

Distinguish Platform Points From Market Points

The word “point” can refer to different price increments. On a currency quote displayed to five decimal places, a movement from 1.25000 to 1.25010 is normally one pip, but ten of the smallest displayed price increments. A spread betting contract may use its own stated betting unit.

This becomes especially important when entering stop distances or configuring an Expert Advisor. Check whether a setting expects pips, the smallest platform price increment, or another unit. A tenfold sizing error is still a tenfold sizing error, however tidy the chart looks.

A Hypothetical Index Trade

Suppose an index spread betting symbol has been confirmed to provide £2 per full index point at your selected volume. Its sell and buy prices are 8,000 and 8,001. You buy at 8,001 and later close at a sell price of 8,031.

The movement between your executed opening and closing prices is 30 points. At £2 per point, the trading profit is £60 before any funding or other adjustments. The spread is already reflected in those execution prices; do not subtract it again.

If your initial stop is 25 points below the entry, the planned price risk is £50. That is not a guaranteed maximum loss because an ordinary stop can execute at a worse price.

Work backwards from an affordable cash loss to the stake, rather than selecting whatever volume the available margin permits. The position sizing guide develops that process without treating margin as a risk budget.

A flow diagram shows the hypothetical index trade: £2 per point, a 30-point favourable move and £60 profit before adjustments; a 25-point stop distance corresponds to £50 planned price risk, not a guaranteed maximum loss.
Calculate exposure from the confirmed cash value per point; an ordinary stop does not guarantee the planned loss limit.

Compare Total MT4 Spread Betting Costs

A useful cost comparison needs the same instrument, account type, trading session and holding period. Comparing one broker’s minimum CFD spread with another broker’s typical spread betting price tells you very little.

Spreads and Execution

Record the spread during the hours you actually trade. Include market openings, quieter periods and any scheduled announcements your strategy routinely encounters. A short observation period will not establish a dependable average, but it can reveal whether a headline price represents your trading conditions.

Small differences accumulate. In a hypothetical comparison, an extra 0.4 points at £2 per point costs £0.80 for each completed trade, assuming unchanged market prices. Across 100 trades, that becomes £80 before differences in execution and other charges.

Compare requested prices with executed prices too. A narrow displayed spread does not cancel an unfavourable fill. The guide to slippage in spread betting explains why order type and market conditions affect the final result.

Overnight Funding and Account Charges

For positions held overnight, obtain the funding calculation, reference rate, broker adjustment and charging timetable. Ask whether the displayed rate is daily or annualised, and how charges appear on the account statement.

Funding deserves particular attention because it can apply to the full notional exposure rather than just the margin posted. The FCA review of CFD and spread betting pricing practices identifies concerns about funding charges and the clarity of cost disclosures.

Check currency conversion, inactivity charges, paid tools and VPS subscriptions where relevant. “No commission” describes one charge category; it does not mean the account is free to trade.

Use a consistent holding period and trading frequency when comparing total spread betting costs. An account suitable for frequent intraday trades may not be economical for positions held for several weeks.

A comparison flow holds instrument, account type, trading session and holding period constant, then checks spreads, execution, overnight funding and other account charges.
A fair comparison uses the same market and holding period and includes more than the displayed spread.

Using Expert Advisors on a Spread Betting Account

If you already use an MT4 Expert Advisor, treat a new spread betting account as a fresh deployment. A familiar platform is not enough to establish that the strategy will size and manage positions correctly.

Check the EA’s assumptions about symbol names, decimal precision, tick value, minimum volume and volume increments. Review any fixed lot settings with particular care. A program can submit a valid order that is entirely wrong for your intended cash risk.

Ask the broker whether your trading method is permitted on the proposed account. Describe it plainly: expected holding time, order frequency, markets traded and whether it opens opposing positions. A general statement that “EAs are supported” does not answer every strategy question.

Test the Trading Logic, Not Just the Installation

Verify that the EA opens the intended stake, places the correct stop and handles rejected orders. Check what happens after a connection interruption and whether restarting the terminal creates duplicate orders.

Historical testing should be treated as an estimate based on its inputs, not an execution guarantee. Review the assumptions for spreads, funding and fills, then test the strategy on the broker’s proposed demo account. A profitable historical report cannot confirm live execution quality.

If continuous operation is required, compare the cost and practical management of a VPS with running a computer yourself. Include connection monitoring, updates and restart procedures in the plan. Automation removes some manual work; it does not remove responsibility for the account.

Know Which Stops Keep Working When MT4 Is Closed

MT4’s standard trailing stop operates in the client terminal. If that terminal is closed, it stops moving the stop level. A stop-loss level already submitted to the server remains in place, but it does not continue trailing. This distinction is documented in the MetaQuotes explanation of MT4 trailing stops.

Ask where each part of your order management runs. An EA that watches prices and sends a closing instruction is not the same arrangement as a stop-loss order already held on the broker’s server.

Do not assume that a stop entered through MT4 is guaranteed. If protection against execution beyond a stated stop price is part of your plan, check whether the broker offers that facility on the actual MT4 spread betting account. Availability on another platform is not sufficient. The comparison of brokers offering guaranteed stops covers that separate requirement.

A decision diagram distinguishes a server-held stop-loss, which remains in place, from MT4’s standard client-side trailing stop, which stops updating when the terminal closes; it also prompts the trader to check whether a stop is guaranteed on the specific account.
A submitted stop-loss can remain on the server, but MT4’s standard trailing stop needs the client terminal running.

Check the Legal Entity and Retail Protections

Before funding an account, match the legal entity in the agreement with the firm’s regulatory record. Check its permissions and contact details, not just the trading name displayed above the login screen. Our guide to checking a broker on the FCA Register sets out the verification process.

For relevant UK retail products, FCA rules require minimum margin of 3.33% on major currency pairs, 5% on major indices and gold, and 20% on individual shares. They also impose an account-level margin close-out requirement at 50% of required margin and negative balance protection. These requirements appear in FCA Handbook COBS 22.5.

Negative balance protection does not protect the money already in the trading account from losses. Nor does the margin close-out rule replace your own position sizing and exit plan.

Do not choose an account simply because it advertises higher exposure. Establish which entity will hold the account and which protections apply before comparing margin requirements.

How to Assess an MT4 Spread Betting Demo

Request a demo configured as closely as possible to the spread betting account you intend to open. A generic forex CFD demo may help you learn the interface without answering questions about spread betting symbols, stake conversion or account charges.

The spread betting demo account comparison provides a starting point. For an MT4 assessment, use a short, repeatable procedure:

  1. Confirm the product. Ask whether the demo represents spread betting and which live account it corresponds to.
  2. Check exposure. Establish the cash value of a point at the minimum volume and at your intended trade size.
  3. Test orders. Open, amend, partially close and close positions; inspect the resulting account history.
  4. Check interruptions. Close the terminal and verify which order functions remain active.
  5. Review the records. Locate execution prices, funding entries and downloadable statements.

Run these checks during your normal trading hours. If your method trades an index opening, a calm midday session is not a useful substitute.

Use the demo to reject unsuitable arrangements, not to certify live performance. Before committing money, resolve any differences between the demo specifications and the proposed live account. There is no benefit in learning the correct stake conversion after the first oversized trade.

When Another Platform May Be More Suitable

MT4 makes sense when you have a clear reason to use it: an existing MQL4 strategy, required indicators or an established trading routine. Familiarity has practical value, provided the account supports the markets and controls you need.

If you are starting without those dependencies, compare the full workflow rather than assuming MT4 is the default. Request demonstrations of order entry, account reporting, mobile access and market coverage. Our comparison of MT5 spread betting brokers covers one alternative.

Choose the account and platform together. Keeping familiar charts is not a good trade if the result is unsuitable minimum stakes or missing instruments.

Does Using MT4 Change Spread Betting Tax Treatment?

The software does not determine the tax treatment; the underlying account and contract do. HMRC’s financial spread betting guidance states that no chargeable gains or allowable capital losses arise from spread betting. That also means spread betting losses are not ordinary capital losses available to offset against investment gains. See HMRC’s financial spread betting guidance.

Do not assume an MT4 forex trade is a spread bet because another account with the same broker offers spread betting. Confirm the product in the agreement and account records. The guide to whether spread betting is tax-free addresses the wider qualifications. Tax treatment depends on circumstances and rules can change.

Choosing an MT4 Spread Betting Broker

Use Pepperstone and FXCM as comparison candidates, not automatic selections. Ask each provider to confirm the spread betting account, MT4 access, required instruments and cash exposure at your intended volume. Then compare costs over the holding period your strategy actually uses.

The most useful account is one whose behaviour you can verify before trading: clear sizing, workable order controls, understandable charges and an identifiable regulated counterparty. MT4 supplies the interface. The broker’s contract and trading conditions determine what happens behind it.
